Australian Open

This morning I took advantage of the fact they decided to move the men's final to the evening a couple of years back, and the fact that Federer is Swiss and in it, so it had to be broadcast live, and woke up early to watch it. It was nice to be able to do something which I usually do at home over here, though I hadn't followed the two weeks like I usually do.

There were quite a few differences to the experience here compared to at home though. Firstly, it was morning, and instead of eating dinner while watching, I was eating brunch. Secondly, while I found it broadcast live here on two different channels, I couldn't understand the commentary on either of them (one was in French and the other was in German). Thirdly, it was snowing over here, so I had some secondary entertainment of the kids in the neighbourhood sliding down in the hill outside my building and throwing snow at each other.

It was an epic five-set match, which made for interesting watching, though I think it would have been more entertaining if I understood the commentary, or could have streamed the radio from the official website, or the television was big enough for me to discern whether the ball as in or out for myself. In the end, it was so disappointing for those to wanted Federer to win, like me. He really stepped up the level of the game, being such a good all round player, and is a pleasure to watch with the grace and fluidity of his movements. But Nadal was just the better player today when it counted, and now with a win in a major on all three surfaces, he looks unstopable.

It was so sad watching the ceremony, with Federer not being able to speak through the tears, and Nadal not being able to celebrate with Federer in tears next to him. Tears must be his way of releasing tension, since I have now watched him cry after both winning and losing the Cup.
