VIP Visit

Today the Vice-Chancellor for Research at the University of Melbourne visited CERN with his wife and two children during their family holiday in Europe organised by the head of my research group at home. My colleague and I were to meet them and take them to meet a couple of people higher up in ATLAS who took us all to the ATLAS Control Room and down to the ATLAS Cavern and then to have lunch in the VIP lunch area of R1.

We were worried that it would be awkward, but it wasn't. The other two physicists were very friendly and talkative and good at explaining everything to people without physics background, and the Vice-Chancellor and his wife were very impressed with what they saw and heard and had heaps of questions.

ATLAS
Here is what we saw in the ATLAS Cavern, the pushed back muon wheels, toroid endcap out and there were people working on the liquid argon calorimeter.
