Bernese Alps

Today me and a few American students from CERN rented a car and drove out to the Bernese Oberland to do this hike

So those photos on the information page were taken in summer, it is quite different after a snowstorm.

Here is the view five minutes from the car:

Picturesque, isn't it?

It was quite scenic, walking along the trail, through the snow, along a creek, under the trees, looking up at the mountains, the snow covered peaks, the green of the evergreens, the red and yellow of the autumn trees and the snow on the valley floor. Just look at all those colours!

And that view! (Sorry about the photo stitching not working properly)

It was really nice walking along, looking around and hearing the new snow crunch beneath our feet. Snow is really pretty.

After reaching Tschingelsee from Kiental via the trail, we ate lunch and walked back along the road. We decided that walking downhill in the snow would mean spending too much time on the ground instead on our feet, not too mention the sun had left the valley and it was getting cold, particularly since our shoes, socks and pants were soaked.

We then drove around the area, to the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys. Now I went to both of them last August and loved them, Lauterbrunnen with the sheer rock faces of the narrow gorge and all its waterfalls, and Grindelwald with the rolling greem hills dotted with cute little wooden Swiss chalets. Both surrounded by snow topped mountains.

However, it was quite different with snow and no sun. Still breathtaking but it's a constrasting beauty, more cold and stark and a little depressing with the lack of colours. I don't know, I apreciate it, I think it takes a little getting used to. Maybe my cold and wet feet were distracting me.

After dark, we went down to Interlaken, where we found a Hooters, which one of the Americans found hilarious, and some dinner, which was very tasty, before heading back to Geneva to return the car at the aeroport and take the bus home.

Twas a long, but very enjoyable day.
